Builders of Jerusalem

It’s no easy task.
A wise man working, seven to seven,
heaven-bent on torturing every ear in Jerusalem,
once remarked:

“They have mouths, but cannot speak,
Eyes, but cannot see;
They have ears, but cannot hear,
Noses, but cannot smell;
They have hands, but cannot touch,
Feet, but cannot walk;
They can make no sound in their throats.”

And so it came to pass, that after the drilling and spilling
and concreting, filling,
Hammering, hatcheting –

Every ear could not hear,
Every eye could not see,
Every mouth could not convey, would not convey,
This madness.

I remember
The day you stopped loving me
So shortly after you had begun.
It was the first day
We lay naked in daylight on my bed
As unmade as we were and are;
I thought of our differences
And how this would change things.

There will come a time when you leave me
As all lovers do
And it is not now –
It is not immediately.
It will entail a long process of your self-discovery
Initiated by my fall from grace.
Know, though, I carry this in my stomach like a secret,
Until that day.

Where Am I?
